LIBRI GRANT 2009
Library Director Thelma Jones has always had a heart for children and giving them the tools needed to develop a love for reading. This is why she applied for - and recently received - a two-to-one matching grant for $1,418 worth of children's books.
"Most of (the books) are Accelerated Reading books or Florida Sunshine State books," Jones said proudly, explaining that the AR and Florida Sunshine State Book programs are designed to foster an appreciation of books and reading skills in school children.
Our Friends of the Library, Dundee, Inc. provided the $350 necessary match and Jones submitted the required paperwork to receive the books through the Libri Foundation, a nationwide nonprofit organization that, through its Books for Children Program, donates new children's books to small, rural libraries throughout the country.
In conjunction with the grant, the library received an additional $350 worth - or 18 books - of math and science books, bringing a total of 164 volumes to the children's department.
"Our library has truly been benefited and is enriched with the addition of all the fiction and nonfiction books just received from the Books for Children grant," Jones said.
"It is so nice to see our young people becoming involved in books. We strive to maintain and increase their interest. The grant has helped us to accomplish that need by the new additions to our collections," she added.
This is the third time the town has received this grant.
"It means a lot because it helps me out in keeping my books budget low," Jones said. "It helps me get more for our patrons."
